Kauaʻi is an incredibly special place with a rich history, a vibrant culture, and generations of families who have called this island home long before it became the destination it is today. Having grown up here, I've had the privilege of watching the island change over the years.

Not all that long ago, Kauaʻi was much more self-sustaining, with many families relying on agriculture, fishing, and strong community connections rather than tourism. As the island has grown and changed, so has the cost of living. Today, many local and Native Hawaiian families have had to leave simply because they can no longer afford to stay in the place they've always called home.

For those who remain, life on an island comes with unique challenges. Many people work multiple jobs, live in multi-generational households, and make daily sacrifices to continue building a life here. The aloha spirit is something I truly believe in, but like anyone, people are also balancing the realities of everyday life.

At the same time, tourism plays an important role in our community, and we're genuinely grateful for visitors who choose to spend their time on Kauaʻi. So many local families and small businesses depend on it. One of the best ways to experience the island is with kindness, patience, and respect for both the people and the places that make Kauaʻi so special.

Whenever possible, I encourage visitors to support local businesses while they’re here. And when I say “local,” I mean families and small businesses that have truly planted roots here — people who have spent years building their lives on Kauaʻi and contributing to the community. When you support a local company, you’re supporting a local family and helping them continue to stay on Kauaʻi.
