Kauaʻi is an incredibly special place with a deep history, strong culture, and generations of families who have called this island home long before it became what it is today. Not too long ago, Kauaʻi was far more self-sustaining, with much of the island relying on agriculture, fishing, and local community support rather than tourism. Over the past several decades, rapid development, changing infrastructure, and the shift away from agriculture have transformed the island in many ways — including dramatically increasing the cost of living. Many local and Native Hawaiian families have been forced to move away simply because they can no longer afford to stay in the only home they’ve ever known.

For those of us still here, many are working multiple jobs, living in multi-generational households, and doing everything possible to keep our roots on this island. The “aloha spirit” people speak of is absolutely real, but sometimes exhaustion and the realities of island life can make it harder to show outwardly every moment of the day.

That said, we are deeply grateful for respectful visitors and for the opportunities tourism provides that help many local families continue living here. Aloha, at its core, is rooted in kindness, patience, and mutual respect — and like respect anywhere else in the world, it is something that is both given and received.

Whenever possible, I encourage visitors to support local businesses while they’re here. And when I say “local,” I mean families and small businesses that have truly planted roots here — people who have spent years building their lives on Kauaʻi and contributing to the community. When you support a local company, you’re supporting a local family and helping them continue to stay on Kauaʻi.
